Hi, my name is Chris Keenan and I’m the founder of Wind Swept Recovery Groups.
I was the straw that broke the camel’s back. I was the unwanted pregnancy in a home steeped in chaos. This is a fact. Another fact, but far more important, is that I am a child of God and am a citizen of heaven.
Two separate facts, one consistent challenge: to live in a manner that is consistent with the new birth I have in Christ and not be held hostage by the pain and suffering we all in experience in this life on earth.
The recovery groups I run are committed to helping Christians break free of the snare of pornography and/or lust. This is not a new snare. Sexual sin has been a consistent problem for people from all walks of life for a very long time. The difference with me is, I am a follower of Jesus and I am called to a higher standard than someone who is not a fellow believer.
If you are reading this and have committed your life to Christ, I want to provide some assistance in helping you to break free of this addictive behaviour.
I know all about addictive behaviours. I’ve tried all kinds of things to run away from trauma/pain, only to come to the same conclusion over and over: the only way to deal with addictive behaviours is learn to face them head on and find out what’s behind the strong desire to “run away.”
This website and our service of online recovery groups are dedicated to dealing with the issues of pornography addiction, but addiction can take on many forms. One of the most sobering things I read years ago about addiction came from a book by Carol Cannon: “alcoholics, church-aholocis and workaholics, all raise the same children.”
We can use pornography or work or church activities as a means of avoiding difficult situations in our lives. In many cases like work, we are generally praised, even if it means we neglect our family members. Some of the most emotionally distraught people I’ve known over the years are pastor’s kids and others whose parents have worked for a church denomination.
Pornography use in the church is rampant and has only been getting worse over the last couple decades. The leaders of most churches have little desire to address this sensitive topic; some because they themselves are caught in the trap of pornography addiction and some because they don’t want to believe the problem is as wide spread as the statistics clearly show. Regardless of why they don’t deal with this problem head on, it’s a massive issue that Christians need help with.
It causes me great pain knowing that the bride of Christ is being held hostage by such high levels of sexual sin. I know that the vast majority of Christians who are struggling with lust/porn addiction don’t know where to turn for help and are afraid of being condemned by others in the faith.
I know what it’s like to be trapped in addictive cycles of behaviour and I get great satisfaction helping others avoid the pain I’ve gone through in my lifetime. I am not a licensed counsellor or therapist, but a fellow brother in Christ who knows intimately the pain of addiction and the high levels of trauma that have contributed to destructive behaviours in my life.
